Leonardo da Vinci's views on arteriosclerosis.

چکیده
OF all the characteristics of Leonardo's scientific work perhaps the most remarkable is his multilateral approach to any problem. His investigation of arteriosclerosis is no exception, for his final conception of the condition was reached by a combination of three separate fields ofresearch. First, his study ofhydrodynamics by which he came to appreciate many of the factors governing the flow of fluids in experimental glass tubes, rivers and canals. Secondly, in his study of anatomy where his observations on the effects of age on anatomical structures, particularly of blood vessels, played an inportant part. Thirdly, his concept of nutrition which added the final touch to his description ofthe process ofthickening ofthe arterial wall.

Tree Branching: Leonardo da Vinci's Rule versus Biomechanical Models
This study examined Leonardo da Vinci's rule (i.e., the sum of the cross-sectional area of all tree branches above a branching point at any height is equal to the cross-sectional area of the trunk or the branch immediately below the branching point) using simulations based on two biomechanical models: the uniform stress and elastic similarity models. Model calculations of the daughter/mother ra...
متن کاملLeonardo Da Vinci's Tensile Strength Tests: Implications for the Discovery of Engineering Mechanics
In one of Leonardo Da Vinci's notebooks, an experiment is described where strengths in tension are measured for various lengths of wire. The notebook indicates that the results of these experiments were that longer wires were weaker than shorter wires. This result de®nes classical mechanics of materials. This con ̄ict has been explained as a note-taking failure by Leonardo. This short note devel...

Reading is a hobby to open the knowledge windows. Besides, it can provide the inspiration and spirit to face this life. By this way, concomitant with the technology development, many companies serve the e-book or book in soft file. The system of this book of course will be much easier. No worry to forget bringing the leonardo da vinci anatomical drawings book. You can open the device and get th...
متن کاملLeonardo da Vinci and the first portrayal of pectus excavatum.
To cite: Ashrafian H. Thorax 2013;68:1081. Studying one of Leonardo da Vinci's images from 1510, I note for the first time that there is an image of pectus excavatum (figure 1) in an elderly individual. This is unlikely to be artistic inaccuracy as his images of others subjects do not reveal a similar pathology. Pectus excavatum was until now first accredited to Johannes Schenck (1530–1598) rep...
متن کاملLeonardo da Vinci's contributions to neuroscience.
Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) made far-reaching contributions to many areas of science, technology and art. Leonardo's pioneering research into the brain led him to discoveries in neuroanatomy (such as those of the frontal sinus and meningeal vessels) and neurophysiology (he was the first to pith a frog). His injection of hot wax into the brain of an ox provided a cast of the ventricles, and re...
